East Point, Georgia

Location and How to Get There

East Point sits in south Fulton County, sharing a border with Atlanta along its northern edge and with College Park to the south, across a land area of roughly 14.7 square miles. It is one of the closer communities in the metro area to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, just a few minutes away by car, and downtown Atlanta is roughly seven miles to the northeast. Two MARTA rail stations, East Point and Lakewood/Fort McPherson, put the Red and Gold Lines within reach of most neighborhoods, and I-285 and I-75/85 provide the main routes for a drive across town from Tucker on the opposite side of the metro area.

A Railroad Town Turned Production Hub

East Point began in 1870 as a small settlement of about sixteen families gathered near the point where the Atlanta and West Point Railroad reached its eastern terminus, opposite West Point, Georgia at the line's western end, which is how the city got its name. The Georgia legislature granted it a city charter in 1887, and by 1880 the growing settlement had a post office, a cotton gin, a sawmill, and several churches. Cotton, lumber, and rail traffic drove its early economy, and the community weathered a long stretch of industrial decline in the twentieth century before rebuilding around new investment. That rebuilding is most visible along the city's northern edge, where the 330 acre former Fort McPherson Army post, closed in 2011, has been redeveloped into Tyler Perry Studios, one of the largest film and television production complexes in the country.

Parks, Trails, and the Dick Lane Velodrome

East Point maintains roughly two dozen parks. Connally Nature Park covers 27 wooded acres of oak trees and native plantings laced with walking trails, while Sykes Park, Jefferson Park, and Sumner Park offer more traditional playgrounds and open lawns closer to residential streets. Sumner Park is also home to the Dick Lane Velodrome, built in 1974 and still the only cycling velodrome in Georgia, which trained competitive cyclists ahead of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and continues to host racing and community programming for local cyclists.

Shopping, Dining, and Neighborhood Character

The city's historic downtown civic block combines several early twentieth century buildings with a small memorial park, and the surrounding blocks mix restored storefronts with residential lofts. Camp Creek Marketplace, along the Camp Creek Parkway corridor, adds more than a million square feet of retail and restaurant space within the city, giving residents a broad range of everyday shopping and dining options without leaving East Point. Housing spreads across more than twenty distinct neighborhoods, ranging from early bungalows and brick ranch homes near the historic core to newer townhomes and infill construction closer to the MARTA lines, giving buyers a wide range of styles and lot sizes to choose from within city limits.

Community Events

East Point's calendar includes a Fourth of July festival with live music and fireworks, a Juneteenth celebration built around local art and food vendors, and a recurring farmers market series that pairs produce stalls with live entertainment. The city also hosts smaller seasonal gatherings tied to its parks and civic block throughout the year. The Tyler Perry Studios campus draws film and television productions that periodically bring public-facing activity, including screenings and community events, to the surrounding area.
